Mangum juror: One juror raised concerns about Durham's image

DURHAM, N.C. -

Witness testimony continued Friday morning after a pause due to concerns about the jury.

One woman, an alternate juror, told the court, "One gentleman took charge and said, ‘Here's what we should do as a team,'" she said. "Truthfully he rambled a bit, but what I got out of it was that we should be concerned about Durham's image. We're representing Durham and there was reference to another trial."

Judge Paul Ridgeway asked Judge if that meant the juror was looking for a particular result or that the jury just needed to be thoughtful, deliberate and thorough.

The juror said it wasn't clear one way or the other.

 "Let me thank you for bringing this concern to our attention," Ridgeway said. "It is exactly what we need jurors to do, so thank you for doing that."

Ridgeway then called each juror in the courtroom to make sure they fully understood the rules. In particular, Ridgeway reminded them that jurors are not to discuss the case among themselves until they are instructed to deliberate.

Ridgeway asked each juror if anything discussed in the jury room would cause them to be unable to fulfill duties.

One juror said the group was "playing a lot of spades."

Ridgeway decided to move forward with the trial.
