12th confirmed cases of rabies reported in Durham

DURHAM, N.C. -

A 12th confirmed case of rabies has been reported in Durham County after a bat tested positive at the state lab of public health.

In this most recent case, an officer with the Sheriff's Animal Services division responded to a residence in the 4500 block of Ryan Street on Nov. 16 after a homeowner called to report she had discovered a bat in her home.

The officer captured the bat and sent it to the public health laboratory for rabies testing.

This is the 12th confirmed case of rabies in Durham.

  • Feb. 5, raccoon, 2300 block Alabama Avenue
  • Feb. 15, raccoon, 600 block Chalice Street
  • March 19, raccoon, 5300 block Cheek Road
  • March 20, raccoon, 9000 block Quail Roost Road
  • April 30, raccoon, 2600 block Banner Street
  • May 21, raccoon, 2200 block Ferrell Road
  • July 3, raccoon, 1200 block Eva Street
  • July 9, fox, 1500 block Bahama Road
  • July 24, skunk, 7800 block Guess Road
  • Sept. 24, raccoon, 1300 Kent Street

Sheriff's deputies have sent 128 animals to the state laboratory for rabies testing in 2013. Animals sent for testing include dogs, cats, bats, foxes, opossums, rabbits, squirrels and raccoons. There were no confirmed rabies cases in Durham County in 2012.
