HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Several families are out of a home after weekend apartment unit caught fire on U.S. Highway 49.

The Hattiesburg Fire Department said the house caught fire Saturday morning just before 10 a.m.

"It was a house that was transformed into seven apartments," Fire Inspector Jason Davis.

He said no one was hurt.

Mel Johnston owns beautiful day right next door, he said  it's a miracle that his business didn't catch on fire as well.

"I walked to the back and the back of the apartments were in flames," he said.

He said he called 911 and they told him help was already on the way.

"Within minutes the fire department was here," he said. "I feel sorry for the families that were over there because they lost everything."

The fire department says the back of the house received most of the damage. An RV parked in between the house and Johnston's business also received damage.

"They had fire trucks everywhere," Johnston said.

He said it took about two hours for the fire to be put out.

"I was rather impressed with the City of Hattiesburg," he said "They saved my business."

The cause of the fire is  undetermined. HFD is still investigating.
