USM Hopes for Continued Grant Funding

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG -- The University of Southern Mississippi hosted its roundtable discussion with positive news involving research.

"Word out from Washington last night is that we will apparently, hopefully have a budget agreement, and within that budget agreement, there is, in fact, sort of a renewal of funding for research," USM Vice President of Research Dr. Gordon Cannon said.

President Rodney Bennett and professors at the university say they learned at the Mississippi Governor's Energy Conference that the state needs to advance in all types of energy alternatives.

Polymer Science Associate Professor Dr. Sarah Morgan explained her students are currently working on polymer organic solar cells that will be flexible and lightweight.

She said graduate and undergraduate students are able to gain experience in hands-on fundamental research that she hopes to see produced commercially some day.

"This helps our students to be more competitive when they go to graduate school or for graduate students to be more competitive in getting jobs or becoming future professors," Morgan said.
