GREENE COUNTY, Miss. - A tragedy hits a Greene County community less than two weeks before Christmas.

The toddler of a local Leakesville pastor, 2-year-old Austin Brown, died in a house fire on Old Avera Road early this morning.

"The family says there was a 2-year-old in the home that they say they were unable to get out,"

Greene County Emergency Management Coordinator Trent Robertson said the family belongs to Leakesville Missionary Baptist Church, where Austin's father, Nathan Brown is the pastor.

"They were a close family and they loved each other and every one of us," said Crystal Evans, a church member.

She said this news is too much to bear, so close to Christmas.

"They were always there for us whenever we needed it anytime night or day," she said.

Evans said  she plans on being their for them ,just as they have been for her and the church family.

"My grandmother passes away a couple of months ago and they were there the whole time," she said.

Officials say Austin's mom and two other siblings were able to get out of the house.

"The father of the 2-year-old sustained burns," Robertson said.

He said Pastor Brown is being treated at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, Ala.

Officials are not sure what caused the fire, but they do believe it was accidental.

"It's a terrible tragedy and it's really touched our community," he said.

Anyone who would like to find out how they can donate money to theBrown family, can do so by contacting members of Leakesville Missionary Baptist Church at these numbers: 601-394-7691 or 601-394-9805.
