Durham police encourage peaceful Jesus Huerta march

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

The Durham Police Department said it has been made aware of a march and vigil for Jesus Huerta Thursday.

Police said that although no one has attempted to obtain a permit for this event, police will allow the march to be held. Participants will need to use the public plaza and sidewalks.

The Durham Police Department said it contacted the Huerta's attorney who directed the department to the event coordinator, Rafael Estrada Maya.

"While we obtained a telephone number for Rafael Estrada Maya, he declined to speak about the event and hung up," said Deputy Chief Larry Smith.

Maya is also believed to have coordinated the march on Nov. 22, which became disorderly when participants threw road flares and firecrackers, damaged a police car and broke windows at Durham Police Headquarters.

"If in the future, the Huerta family wishes to place a memorial or hold a vigil themselves on the parking lot of Police Headquarters, the Police Department is willing to work directly with them or through their attorney to make such arrangements," said Durham Police Chief Jose L. Lopez Sr.

Durham police is asking for those at the rally to follow certain guidelines:

  • No impeding traffic by blocking or marching upon the City streets;
  • No entry upon  the Police Headquarters parking areas or grassy areas immediately adjoining the Police Headquarters building;
  • No possession or use of pyrotechnics;
  • No wearing masks, hoods or devices which conceal the identity of the wearer;
  • No damage to property;
  • No disorderly conduct.
