Laurel Declared A Purple Heart City

LAUREL, Miss. - The City of Laurel is now officially declared as a "Purple Heart City" for honoring service members who were wounded in action..

"Laurel is so ready and willing to aid veterans in any way that they can," said Mayor Johnny Magee.

LaHe said it's important to take time out to honor those brave men and women who have served our county.

He signed a proclamation today declaring Laurel as a "Purple Heart City."

"They took the step of us and we are willing to take the step for them," he said.

The Purple Heart Award is given to soldiers who are wounded during combat.

"I got shrapnel rounds to the lags and to the face," Benny Duett, a Purple Heart Veteran wounded in the Vietnam War.

"I can remember I felt the heat," he said. "When I hit the ground all I saw was blood."

Laurel Resident Steve Campbell is also a Purple Heart Veteran.

"I was in the Marines in Vietnam," he said. "When were attached and I received shrapnel wounds to the back and legs."

Both men are now leaders in the state's Military Order of the Purple Heart. Their wives serve in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. They say are proud of their husbands' serving our country.

"We don't wish that on any servicemen to be wounded but we are honored and proud of our husbands," said Vanessa Duett, Benny Duett's wife.
