HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Thousands of kids will get the chance to open up gifts on Christmas because of the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program.

"I wouldn't have been able to get them the gifts that they wanted so they will be happy that they will be able to open gifts on Christmas morning," Miranda Griffith said, a parent.

Griffith is just one of the parents who stopped by the Salvation Army to pick up toys for kids.

Today the organization says they distributed gifts and food boxes to about 950 families.

Parents also got the chance to pick out a book for their kids as well.

Those books were donated from through the "Give a Child a New Book Day" book drive.

Organizers say it's important to give back to those in need, especially during the holidays.

"Those are the stories that make this worth and we know that we are doing something positive for the community," said Captain Frances Gilliam of the Salvation Army.
