How to dispose of your Christmas tree

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Now that Christmas is over and the turkey is gone, what to do with the tree?

Strip it down and haul it to the curb, that's what. Most cities in the area pick up trees for no charge.

Here's a summary of some of the area's policies when it comes to disposing of Christmas trees:

Raleigh

Raleigh residents can dispose of their Christmas trees by placing them at the curb with regular yard waste on their scheduled collection day.

Be sure to remove all bags, stands, lights, tinsel, ornaments and other non-vegetative items from the tree before placing it at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the collection day. Do not put trees at the curbside prior to your collection day. Artificial trees being discarded should be disassembled and placed in the garbage cart. City crews will also collect natural wreaths for recycling; any wires, metal or bows must be removed from wreaths before they are placed on the curb for pickup. You can get Raleigh's schedule here.

Durham

City of Durham residents can place their tree curbside on their normal pickup days, and the trees will be picked up the next day.

Residents can also bring trees to the city facility at 2115 East Club Boulevard.

Fayetteville

Fayetteville city residents can put their trees out for curbside collection by Monday, Jan. 7.  The City will make special pickups Jan. 7-11.  All lights, stands and trimmings should be removed from the tree.    If a resident lives outside the city or misses the pickup, they can drop the tree at the Botanical Gardens (Hwy 301 North) any day before Jan. 12.  

Cary

Cary citizens can leave their trees at the curb to be picked up for no charge. The trees should be stripped of lights, tinsel and ornaments before being put out.

Chapel Hill

Christmas trees are collected with the regular yard waste schedule. All decorations and tinsel should be removed, however.

Wendell

Christmas trees are picked up each week as part of the regular garbage collection.
