Eric Becoats to step down as Durham Schools superintendent Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

Durham Public Schools Superintendent Eric Becoats will step down Tuesday amidst controversy about how he used his district-issued credit card.

Becoats will also be taking a hefty paycheck along with him. The Durham County Board of Education will pay Becoats a one-time severance pay of just under $300,000.

His contract ran through 2016 and Becoats spent three years as superintendent with an annual salary of more than $215,000.

Becoats had submitted his resignation on Dec. 19 after records revealed in October that he spent more than $20,000 with his district-issued credit card on out of state conferences, air travel, dinners, lunches and more.

He also came under fire for inappropriate use of an activity bus.

As the board prepares to begin their search for a replacement, Hugh Osteen, the Deputy Superintendent of Operations, will serve as acting superintendent of Durham Public Schools.

Becoats was named "Superintendent of the Year" by the National Alliance of Black Student Educators in 2012.
