Laurel Plans Beacon Street Revamp

Posted: Updated:

Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee explained the Beacon Street Gateway Project is a concept to beautify Beacon Street from it's intersection with I-59 to Central Ave. leading into downtown.

The road will be 4 lanes with a turn lane in the middle and green space on each side.

Utilities and power lines will run underground, meaning fallen wires won't be a problem during storms.

The project is estimated to cost $4.5 million, but a federal grant is offsetting $3.6.

Neil Schaeffer is in charge of the project.

"This goes hand-in-hand with the projects we have now with re-paving, making Laurel look better, making it more inviting to businesses hoping that we can spur some economic development with this project," Magee said.

Pending MDOT's approval, the project is slated to begin later next year.
