HATTIESBURG, Miss. - About 175 runners hit the pavement early this morning for a 12K run along Longleaf Trace.

Amber Keene and Katie Dixion are just two of the runners who participated in the Steam Whistle 12K run.

"We are both avid runners and we like to live a healthy lifestyle," Keene said.

"What better way to get a year started off with other runners," Dixon said.

The race is put on by the pine belt pacers every New Year.

"We are a club that promotes health fitness and running in this area," said Audrey Jackson, president of the Pine Belt Pacers.

"We want to encourage people to get out and move," she said.

After the race is over, everyone also gets a chance to eat traditional New Year's food.

"It's one of the things that's fun and special about the Steam Whistle," said Donna Davis, a member of the Pine Belt Pacers."

"We've got black eyed peas so that everyone is lucky, we've got cabbage so hopefully everyone will have a wealthy 2014," he said.

Organizers say they also hopes this race shows Mississippians in a different light.

"Mississippi is on the wrong end of so many scales," Jackson said. "We are the fattest the most out of shape. I think it's important for us to come together as a community and promote fitness so we live longer and healthier lives."
