Jones County Woman Witnesses Cat Killed With Hedge Clippers

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - A Jones County woman says she and her son witnessed a man cut a cat up with hedge clippers, and police say he admitted doing it.

"I just could not believe," said Tia Marie Puckett.

She said two days before Christmas, she was driving down Service Road with her son when she says they saw Warren Holifield kill a kitten.

"I told my son, Dominick look at this, this is what we are really seeing," she said 

Puckett said Holifield noticed her and called her over, but she kept going and called the police.

"He went and talked to the man and the man admitted to him that did indeed killed the kitten with hedge clippers," she said.

Major Jamie Tedford said Holifield told them the cat had been a nuisance to his property on several different occasions.

"What we could found was that this cat was breaking into his residence from vents," he said. "The guy did show proof that the animal was breaking into his residence, and there was economical losses."

Puckett saidThat still doesn't justify killing the animal.

"That's not a reason to mutilate a cat like that," she said.

The state's statue regarding cats and dogs say a person cannot be found guilty of simple cruelty or aggravated cruelty if he or she cannot stop the animal from an act. Tedford says that's the reason they could not arrest him for criminal charges.

"The deputy could not arrest him because it didn't happen in his presence, and there was not any kind of crime scene where there was blood everywhere," he said.

We did attempt to reach out to Holified but he did not get back with us.

Puckett did file a complaint with Justice Court.  The day for them to appear in Justice Court is Jan.  30.
