HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Not only does the cold weather affect you... But it also affects your car.

IIf you are going to be driving in the bitter cold, it's a good idea to make sure your car's maintenance is up to date.

"You want to make sure your tire pressure is checked," said Mike Davis, manager at D & D Tire Company.

"As the temperature gets colder you tend to lose air pressure," he said. "On the door of your car,  it will tell you how much air to put in it."

Davis said cold weather also has a tendency to kill a car's battery.

"When the temperature goes from about 80 to 32 degrees, you lose about 35 percent efficiency in the battery," Davis said. "As they get older, you tend to lose that cranking power."

It's also a good idea to let the car warm up before hitting the road.

"The car is more efficient if its running after its warmed up," he said.

One of the most important things during winters like these, is antifreeze.

"You don't want your car to freeze up because when it does it will break something," Davis said.

If you plan on traveling during heavy snow or ice, make sure your tire treads are good.

"You can do a penny test and turn it upside down and if you can see Lincoln's head then it's time for new tires," Davis said.
