HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The staff at the Hattiesburg Zoo takes precautions to keep their animals safe during the bitter cold.

They say they've placed hay in some of the animals holding facilities to create a warm barrier next to the ground.

Zoo keepers said the freezing temperatures are just too cold for some of the birds.

They have moved a few of them inside to keep them warm with electric heaters.

They have also increased the diets of some of the animals.

"We do up their diets, just to help them since they are going to be spending more energy keeping themselves warm, we just give them more things, and a lot more treats to get them up there," Katie Barry said, an animal curator at the Zoo.
