Firemen Injured While Fighting Welding Shop Fire

Posted: Updated:

Three firefighters are recovering after an injury while battling a Columbia business fire.

Chief Larry Ratliff said they were fighting a blaze at ABS Welding shortly after 10 a.m. when a wall collapsed on them.

The extent of their injuries are unknown, but they are expected to recover.

When firemen arrived on the scene, the fire was already through the roof.

Ratliff said it started when a few of the employees were welding materials in a trailer and something inside it sparked the flames.

Volunteer crews from Tri-Community, Foxworth and Pine Burr also responded to the scene.

"They all helped us, and if it wasn't for them, this would've been a real bad disaster," Ratliff said.

Crews battled the blaze and blocked the street for several hours before containing the fire.  The building is a total loss.
