United Way Receives Hefty Grant

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG -- Bi-Lo Holdings Foundation donated $25,000 to the United Way.

The money will be used for food vouchers for families currently enrolled in programs run by Friends For Financial Freedom.

"There's a big gap between people who can qualify for food stamps versus people who can actually afford to purchase a home and go back to school," Program Manager Dr. Joy Smithson said.

That's the group they're targeting.

"They fall through the cracks usually, so the food voucher program will help us help them help their bottom line," Smithson said.

She explained the program will work in conjunction with another organization.

"We would just purchase boxes from One Harvest Food Program, which is operated by Christian Services and provide for the family that way," Smithson said.

She is grateful for the help from Bi-Lo.

"$25,000 will make a big difference in our program, and it means a lot to the clients that we serve, but it means a lot to our community overall," Smithson said.

She explained if people in the community are doing well, it in turn helps businesses and stimulates economic growth.
