Hattiesburg Man to Serve Prison Time for Hit & Run

Posted: Updated:

The following is a press release from the Attorney General's office.

HATTIESBURG -- A Hattiesburg man is going to prison for leaving the scene of an accident, announced Attorney General Jim Hood today.

Shelby Johnson, age 46, of Hattiesburg, appeared in Forest County Circuit Court before Judge Bob Helfrich Monday. Johnson entered a plea of guilty to the felony offense of leaving the scene of an accident. The plea was the result of an indictment handed down against Johnson and the subsequent prosecution of the crime.  The investigation revealed that Johnson left the scene of an accident after striking a pedestrian with his vehicle during a rainstorm.  The victim was severely injured and had been removed from the scene by EMS when Johnson returned to the location and contacted law enforcement several hours later.

As a result of his guilty plea and upon the recommendation of the Attorney General's Office, Judge Helfrich sentenced Johnson to 10 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections with eight years suspended, two years behind bars and three years of post-release supervision. Johnson was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine and $100 to the Mississippi Attorney General's Victim Assistance Program.

"While this isn't a typical case we prosecute, it is a good example of our working relationship with our district attorneys," said Attorney General Hood.  "We are happy to assist them upon request, as in this case.  I hope it serves as a reminder that leaving the scene of an accident is a crime and one punishable by time behind bars."

This case was investigated by Keith Milsap of the Attorney General's Public Integrity Unit and prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorney General Mikell Buckley.  The Hattiesburg Police Department assisted with the investigation.
