Mississippi House Passes Welfare Drug Testing Bill

Posted: Updated:
The Mississippi House has passed a bill that would require drug testing for some welfare applicants.

The bill passed the Republican-controlled House 74-46 after four hours of debate Wednesday. It goes to the Senate for more work later this session.

House Democrats asked dozens of questions about the privacy and constitutionality of drug testing for people seeking Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

Democrats offered several amendments that ultimately failed, including one that would've required drug testing for corporate executives, college students and others who receive state financial support.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant supports the drug testing proposal, saying it could lead to treatment for welfare recipients who are found to be using illegal substances.

Democratic Rep. Steve Holland says the bill is "narrow-minded" and driven by conservative political interests.
