State Rep. Toby Barker Proposes Election Reform Bill

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Mississippi State Representative Toby Barker plans to present a municipal election reform bill that he says was sparked by the previous Hattiesburg elections.

"We are not here to rehash a very dark divisive chapter in our city's history, however we are here to begin a dialogue and to start a problem," Barker said.

He held a press conference Friday at the courthouse about the proposal.

He says if the bill is passed, changes will come for absentee ballots, curbside voting, and possibly the date of the election.

Barker said he's pushing that no absentee ballot leaves the city clerk's office on Election Day. He also wants for clerks to process absentee ballot requests within two business days.

Supporters of the bill say they think the procedures will not only help Hattiesburg but other cities as well.
