USM Baseball Team Visits DuBard School

Posted: Updated:

Southern Miss athletes came together today to uplift students at the DuBard School for Language Disorders.  They called it Black and Gold Day.

Excitement filled the classrooms at the as the Golden Eagle baseball team visited with students.

"It's like an awesome thing to meet them," said student Noah Gibson.   "It's a great life."

Noah's class made cards to give the players.  Noah drew a baseball field.

The team is just as excited as the students according to Coach Scott Berry.

"To see their smiles, to answer their questions, to see them dressed in black and gold and actually look up to you and to be able to kind of be able to feel like your words mean something to them means everything," Berry said.

DuBard Director Maureen Martin said the event is an opportunity for the kids to learn about baseball and golden eagles, and it shows kids that even athletes have to do their homework.

"It gives our young people that opportunity to look up to people who work hard, who are disciplined, who are accomplishing things," Martin said.

As Berry spoke to the students after an autograph session, he explained to the kids that he understands they have challenges, but they're not alone.

"Each person has their own challenges, and the choice is to get up and meet those challenges and continue to work hard," Berry said.
