Petal Fire Department Receives "Golden Ax" Award

Posted: Updated:

PETAL, MS -- Each year the Muscular Dystrophy Association rewards fire departments that help them raise money.  For the second time in four years, Petal earned the Golden Ax for raising the most money in a small town.

"When we do it, we don't really beg for money, but if people are there and they want to donate money, we take it, and all the money goes straight to MDA," Battalion Chief Shane Pickett said.

This year the department raised almost $9,000.  They did it in three days with what they call "fill the boot".

Pickett said all the money raised helps pay for a surgeon that works with muscular dystrophy patients.

Firefighter Pate Powell helped draw attention to the "fill the boot" drive by dressing up as Sparky the fire dog and dancing around the intersection where the firefighters were collecting money.

"It's pretty awesome just for the simple fact of how small petal is and how the community came together and raised as much money as we did," Powell said.
