HATTIESBURG, Miss.- February is Black History Month and each Tuesday of this month we're connecting you to local civil rights leaders and advocates in the Pine Belt.

This week's story highlights the life and legacy of Carrie Magee.

In 1964,  Magee who was a local school teacher said registered to vote at the Forrest County Courthouse three times, and was denied each time.

Magee says Civil Rights activists used her application to sue those keeping blacks from voting.

That case opened up the door for others have the same opportunity.

"That was the thing that really broke the barrier and then on from after that they all of us regardless of your color of your skin we could go and register to vote," Magee said.
