Pine Belt Eyesores Part 2

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -From eyesore to no more, a Pine Belt homeowner looks for answers After the city tears down his home.

"It was a three story house, "said Earl Lee, the former homeowner of 814 Buschman Street. "It's just gone."

Lee purchased the house in 1974 and he passed it on to his son in 1990. The home was built in the early 1900s. Lee admits it needed some repairing.

"My son was repairing it but the code enforcement come and shut him down and said he wasn't using the right materials," he said.

That was last summer.  Lee said in January of this year, the family was notified the house would be torn down. He said just three days later, the house was gone.

"They said it was a priority for them to tear it down," he said.

Lee said the home wasn't the only one in the neighborhood that needed repair.

He claims the same code of enforcement that halted construction on his home before tearing it down, isn't doing anything about other homes in the neighborhood.

"This house could have been fixed," he said. "This house is in a lot better shape than some other's and I've sent pictures to the code department."

Lee wants all homes in the neighborhood held to the same standard.

"They need to do the same thing, tear hem down or bring them up to code.," he said.

WHLT reached out to Hattiesburg's code enforcement office, but none wanted to comment about Lee's property or others in the neighborhood.

Normally when you do a story about a shark you do a stand-up on the beach but not this time.  See these fishermen don't want to tell me where their fishing hole is.  It's not just to protect their spot
