Local Dentist Makes Jewelry Out Of Tornado Debris

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - He usually is busy cleaning teeth and filling cavities , but a local dentist has been busy making jewelry out of materials left over from the Feb. 10 tornado.

The tornado destroyed parts of Westminister Presbyterian on North 25th Avenue.

Westminster member, Erik Graham, dentist at Baker and Graham, saw beauty in the debris.

"I noticed some of the glass on the pews and on the ground," Graham said.

They were from the stained windows in the sanctuary. He started picking up the scrap pieces.

"I decided the next morning that I would make some earrings for my wife because it was coming up to Valentine's Day," he said.

That one pair of earrings kicked off a fundraising project for the church. He's been making crosses out of the glass, mixing it with some of his dental supplies.

"A pendent that someone could put on a necklace or use as a Christmas tree ornament," he said.

The filling is orthodontic acrylic used to make mouth guards and the molds are made from teeth impression materials.

"I started using a polish that is in a standard dental office," he said.

He never imagined that the project would grow so big.

"We've probably sold about 100 crosses and I have enough glass to make about 100 more."

All the proceeds go to the church's restoration fund, helping pay for repairs. Each pendant cost $100. For anyone who would like information how to purchase a pendant, call Graham's office at 601-268-3333.
