Westminster Presbyterian: A Year After Tornado

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Even though it's been a year since the tornado struck the Pine Belt, some are still on the road to recovery.

Pastor Steve Ramp of Westminster Presbyterian Church said says he cant believe it's been that long.

"We were devastated," he said. "The carnage here the wreckage was incredible."

Busted windows, an open roof, and a damaged sanctuary were just some of the problems the tornado left behind.

"We first had to determine if the building could be salvaged," Ramp said.

Church members were glad the church could be saved, but it's taking a lot of interior work to repair the damage.

"We had to replace the roof, rebuild the walls ,and basically gut the building," Ramp said.

Crews are working to rebuild the inside of the church and add a new building to the site.

"The new construction is going to connect the old building to a new fellowship hall and the corridor will have bathrooms," he said.

the majority of the expenses to rebuild the old church will be covered by insurance.

"It will take about $3.5 million to fix the old part and about a $1.7 million to build the new part,"  he said. "It's a big mountain to climb but with god's grace and support we are going to make it."
