Petal School Starts Dyslexia Lab

Posted: Updated:

PETAL -- Mississippi Legislatures recently passed a bill mandating that all kindergartners and first graders be screened for dyslexia tendencies, but one local school is taking that a step further.

"The state does not require that we serve those students through a lab, but we want to be proactive and try to meet the needs of those students as early as possible," Petal Primary School Principal Kim Raulston said.

A new dyslexia lab started this year with two full time and six part time teachers that work one-on-one with the students who show dyslexic tendencies in that screening.

They each spend either 30 minutes three days a week or 45 minutes two days a week with the special tutor.

The program director trained all the tutors, teachers and assistants on the Barton Method.

Right now about 185 students attend the special lab.

Normally when you do a story about a shark you do a stand-up on the beach but not this time.  See these fishermen don't want to tell me where their fishing hole is.  It's not just to protect their spot
