NEW AUGUSTA, Miss. - Animal cruelty is a growing problem in the Pine Belt.

Southern Pines Animal Shelter Operations Manager Katherine Sammons says enough is enough when it's comes to animal cruelty in our area.

"Just in the past two months we've had a kitten cut up with garden shears, the Chihuahua that was beaten to death, and we also had a case in Jones co where a dog was dragged from the back of a pick up truck.

David Crane was arrested for aggravated cruelty to a dog last week. New Augusta Police say Crane made a Facebook post saying he beat a Chihuahua to death because the animal bit him. Sammons was outraged.

"I was very angry especially after I found out it was one of my  shelter dog's from about five years ago," she said. "As soon as a I saw the post I started to call law enforcement."

Police say crane turned himself in after they contacted him, he confessed.

Sammons says animal cruelty happens more often than most think.

"Maybe the public doesn't understand how often it goes on but it's rampant in our community," she said.

She's pushing for stronger laws against the crime.

"There is no first offense felony for animal cruelty," she said. "Animals count on us to be their voice."

Bond was set at $1,000 for Crane. He will have to appear in court on March 10.
