St. Pete may get curbside recycling

ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

It's the largest Florida city without curbside recycling. St. Petersburg City Council members are expected to change that Thursday.

City Public Works Administrator Michael Connors says he will present a plan to start a citywide curbside recycling service at Thursday’s City Council meeting. He expects the proposal to pass and the service to start by the end of September.

The St. Petersburg League of Women Voters released a report last year showing the city is lacking when it comes to recycling.

“Why keep burning this waste?” asked League President Karen Coale. “What we're really involved with is making it easy for people to recycle.”

The city started offering a private recycling service a few years ago. Coale is one of a fraction of homeowners that now pays to use it. Hundreds of other residents bring their recyclables to free drop-off sites each day.

"I think the hardest part about recycling is for the user to actually be able to recycle,” said St. Petersburg resident Curran Kelsey.

Connors says the city would contract with a private hauler for a single stream collection system, similar to the one Hillsborough County now has in place.

“It'd be on wheels and it would be provided to each household,” explained Coale.

Connors says residents would pay, at most, $3 to $4 each month for the service.

The meeting will be held Thursday at St. Petersburg City Hall at 4 p.m.
