Tree Falls On Car, Power Lines Down; 1 Person Dead

UPDATE: Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said the victim who died in the accident on Thursday is 53-year-old Janice Bennett of Purvis.

----

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Police say, one person is dead after a tree fell on top of a car, brining down power lines, starting a fire, then killing the driver.

It happened this afternoon around 1:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of Richburg Road.

The wreck seems to be the true definition of an accident.

"The car was possibly going forward when the tree fell," Lt. Jon Traxler said. "There was no contributing factors that could have been avoided."

Once the tree fell, it caused a chain reaction and a power outage on Richburg Road.

"Telephone poles are down, the Comcast cables are down," he said.

Authorities are not sure what exactly sparked the fire, but they know at least one person was inside the vehicle that died as a result.

"The winds made the fire spread quickly and around the house here," he said.

The coroner is sending the victim off for an autopsy.

Police say it's possible that high winds might have blown the tree down.
