Mississippi Board of Education OKs Common Core Courses

Posted: Updated:
Mississippi public school students will see new math and English courses aligned to the Common Core state standards beginning next year.

The state Board of Education approved new course descriptions Friday on a 3-2 vote. Board members who object say they believe teachers needed another year to prepare.

The board adopted Common Core in 2010, but 2014-2015 will be the first year that courses and tests are aligned with the standards. Proponents say Common Core, which has been adopted by 44 other states, will help students learn more analytically and less by memorization. Opponents see the standards as academically flawed and a loss of state control.

The approval of new courses follows the board's approval in January of new textbook lists and a transition plan for standardized tests.
