4 indicted in Wake bail bondsmen scheme

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Indictments were handed up Tuesday in a case involving a Wake County Clerk of Court and bail bondsmen who worked to cheat the state of North Carolina and the Wake County Public School System out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Named in the indictments released Tuesday were Kelvin Lawrence Ballentine, Kenneth Vernon Golder II, James L. Perkins and Latoya Tanisha Barnes.

Ballentine turned himself in Tuesday.

Ballentine was indicted on felony counts of:

  • Obtaining property by false pretenses (of more than $100,000)
  • Accessing a government computer
  • Altering court records

The indictments say Ballentine, an assistant clerk, falsified court records in the Clerk of Court's office involving bail bond forfeitures.

Golder was indicted on felony counts of:

  • Obtaining property by false pretenses
  • Accessing a government computer
  • Altering court records

The indictments say Golder "with the intent to cheat and defraud obtain monetary benefits in the total amount of $480,100 from the State of North Carolina and Wake County Public School System."

The indictment says Golder caused the falsification of electronic court records in the Clerk of Court's office pertaining to numerous bail bond forfeiture proceeds.

Perkins was indicted on felony counts of:

  • Obtaining property by false pretenses
  • Causing a government computer to be accessed for the a scheme to defraud the government
  • Altering court records

The indictments say Perkins sought to cheat the state and WCPSS of $73,800. The indictments say Perkins, a a bail bondsman, paid fees and gave items of value to Ballentine of the Wake County Clerk of Court's office.

Barnes was indicted for:

  • Obtaining property by false pretenses
  • Accessing a government computer
  • Alerting court records

The indictments say Barnes, a deputy clerk, sought to cheat the state and the WCPSS of $27,400 by falsifying court records in the Clerk of Court's office.
