BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The NCAA has barred Southern University's winter sports teams from playing in the postseason as they continue to investigate issues with the school's academic eligibility paperwork.
WBRZ-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1bQ4Usi ) the NCAA said Thursday that both the men and women's basketball teams, and the women's bowling teams, will be barred from postseason competition.
The decision eliminates playoff hopes for the basketball squads, each with 13-2 records.
The problem stems from eligibility and retention data Southern submitted in December to the NCAA's Academic Performance Program. The data was found to be incomplete and inaccurate. Without it, Southern can't prove its teams meet minimum standards required in order to participate in postseason play.
Southern said it's still working with the NCAA to hopefully restore their spring sports' eligibility.
