USM Begins "Health is Golden" Campaign

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG -- According to the Mississippi Department of Health, obesity is the leading health concern for children and adults in the state.

Today marks the start of USM's "Health is Golden Campaign" to help fight that fear.

"With this campaign we're going to implement a lot of activities and programs that will help us to educate students, faculty and staff about nutrition and exercise and just how to live a healthy lifestyle," Health Education and Promotion Director Jodi Ryder said.

USM is prepared to give everyone on campus the tools they need including healthy choices in campus dining venues, exercise opportunities and incentive programs.

One of those programs is called the "Healthy 100."  The first 100 faculty and staff who have a body mass index of more than 27 percent, high blood pressure, high glucose levels and high cholesterol are eligible.

"We're giving them the opportunity to sign up for this program, which will give them free membership to the Payne Center, free sessions with a personal trainer and free consultations with our dietician," Ryder said.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation presented the university with a check for $250,000 to kick off the program.

"Health is something that we all have in common," Ryder said.  "No matter what your major is, whatever your job is, you're not going to be as good if you don't have your health."
