NC boy asked to leave My Little Pony backpack at home, school said it caused disruption

Posted: Updated:
BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -

Grayson Bruce, is a 9-year-old who attends school in Buncombe County, North Carolina.
One of his favorite cartoons is My Little Pony. The show has been around for decades along with toys, stuffed animals. and backpacks.  That's exactly what has caused a stir in his class.  He has a My Little Pony backpack which some people say is girly. It's prompted some bullying behavior. He says kids have punched him, shoved him, and called him names.  Now the school has asked him to leave the backpack at home so it doesn't cause a distraction.

Buncombe County schools says it created a disruption in the classroom. Jason Rhodes assistant communication director with the school district issues a statement that said in part, "Buncombe County Schools takes bullying very seriously, and we will continue to take steps to resolve the issue."

Grayson's mom, Noreen Bruce, sees it differently. She says there's nothing wrong with the cartoon characters that promote friendship.  Noreen says there's no violence and no bad words, which is hard to find these days.

Grayson has supporters at school as well.  A friend created a support page with the message "<3 for Grayson" are circulating on Facebook.
