DURHAM, N.C. -

A Duke University student was killed and another was seriously injured Friday in a car crash in Florida while returning from a spring break trip.

Rebecca DeNardis, a senior from Cary, was killed Friday afternoon when the van she was in was struck by another vehicle, the university said.

"Dean Sue [Wasiolek], Police Chief John Dailey and I drove to Rebecca's house this evening to meet with her family and tell them that the entire Duke community mourns the loss of their daughter, who was a shining light for us," said Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs

The university said another student, who was not identified, was airlifted to a hospital in Pensacola, where he is in stable condition.

There were seven student on board the van at the time of the collision along with the director of Duke's Outdoor Adventures program.

The students were returning to campus after a five-day canoeing and camping trip along Florida's Blackwater River during Duke's spring break.

DeNardis was a dean's list student double-majoring in computer science and mathematics.

Charges are pending against the driver of the other vehicle.
