Update: Wanted attempted murder suspect shot after high speed chase

Posted: Updated:
A man accused of shooting a woman in Jacksonville and running from officers is in the hospital under police custody.

The State Highway Patrol says a high speed chase started Sunday afternoon when officers tried stopping 60-year-old George Evans on US 701 near Whiteville in Columbus County. He refused to pull over.

Troopers say when Evans finally came to a stop on US 74, he got out of his vehicle with a weapon. And that's when police shot him.

Evans was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He faces several charges including attempted first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Those charges stem from what happened at the Olive Garden in Jacksonville Saturday night. Police were called to the restaurant on Western Boulevard for a shooting in the parking lot.

Police say Evans shot a woman, who is a former family member, and left the scene in her car. The victim is an employee at the Olive Garden.

She was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.

The company released a statement saying they're deeply saddened by the situation and are providing counseling for all team members.
