Severe Weather Coverage - Tornado Damages Covington County

A tornado touched down early Monday morning in Covington County, north of the City of Collins. Officials said it hit around 2 a.m. and that there were seven minor injuries reported. Crews cut through trees in the area as the damage to the area was assessed.

The New Hopewell Church was damaged during the tornado, along with several homes in Covington County. The roof of the church was damaged.

According to EMA officials, some of the areas in Covington County with the most damage include:
- New Hopewell Church Rd.
- Salem School Road
- Parts of Highway 37
- Roscoe McDaniel Road
- Bookout Hill Lane
- William Warren
- Vester Pickering

A shelter has been opened at the Covington County Multipurpose Center on 68 Collins Industrial Park Drive in Collins.

School was also canceled for Monday for Hopewell Elementary School because of the damage in the area.
