Friday Sports Recap: Jennie Finch, Southern Miss Football & More

Posted: Updated:

Friday was high profile for the Pine Belt, as two-time Olympic softball medalist Jennie Finch graced FCA's Breakfast of Champions on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi. She spoke to the youth about keeping the faith, and later took the time to take pictures and meet with aspiring players at Pete Taylor Park.

Speaking of the Pete, a uniquely enthusiastic baseball fan will be at Sunday's game against Louisiana Tech. John Reimer, also known as the Baseball Buddha, has attended a baseball game every calendar day since Feb. 10. The games he enjoys range from MLB to the little leagues.

By the time he gets into town, Southern Miss will have already played its annual Black and Gold game. After relocating the scrimmage to Petal High School last year due to the Feb. 10 tornado, the game returns to The Rock in 2014. The contest kicks off at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Finally, the William Carey softball team has been named one of 10 host sites for the 2014 NAIA Softball National Championship. Auburn-Montgomery is the only other team from the SSAC to host a first round grouping.
