Black Defeats Gold, 45-25, at Annual Spring Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Black squad accumulated 369 yards of offense on its way to a 45-25 victory over the Golden team in Southern Miss’ annual Black and Gold game, Saturday afternoon at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

“I really thought, throughout the spring, that we improved on the things that mattered; attitude, energy and body language,” said Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken. “I thought our guys were flying around. There was more energy. It was productive for what we were trying to get accomplished. We’re still a ways away, but today was another day for our guys to get out in The Rock and compete.”

Jalen Richard led all rushers with 12 attempts for 139 yards and a touchdown. He also added three receptions for 33 yards and a score. George Payne led the Gold Team with 12 rushes for 49 yards.

Cole Weeks and Parker Adamson split time at quarterback for the Gold squad. They each connected on 13-of-25, with Weeks throwing for a game-high 206 yards and two touchdowns and Adamson adding 83 yards and a touchdown.

Marquise Ricard led the Black squad with five receptions for 74 yards and touchdown. Chad Cook added four catches for 39 yards.

Jarell Aaron led all Gold receivers with seven catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. Demarius Howard had four receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown and D. J. Thompson added 75 yards on five catches. Cooper Harrington added a touchdown reception.

C-USA Pitcher of the Week Nominee

Player: Conor Fisk_____________                School:_Southern Miss__________________

Supporting Information for Pitcher of the Week Nominee: Conor Fisk opened the Louisiana Tech series by throwing a complete-game, three-hit shutout in a 2-0 Golden Eagle victory. It was the first complete-game blanking of an opponent since Fisk defeated Tulane 2-0 on April 7, 2013. Fisk retired the first six, and 12 of the first 13 batters he faced in the contest. After allowing a walk and single to start the fifth, Fisk got a sacrifice, lineout and a strikeout looking to end the Bulldogs biggest threat of the contest. He allowed just one runner on past the fifth, a single in the seventh, and picked him off base. Fisk leads the team in victories as he improved to 4-1 on the year.

Team Notes
* The Golden Eagles finished last week with a 3-1 record, and have now won four of the last five, nine of the last 13 and 13 of the last 18 games.
* Southern Miss won its sixth-straight C-USA series to start its league season, marking the first time the program has done that since the 2003 club won seven series in a row to start that season.
* The Louisiana Tech series marked the first three-game sweep of an opponent this season and first C-USA sweep since the Golden Eagles took three games from UAB on April 26-27, 2013.
* Southern Miss did not allow a run to Louisiana Tech for the first 24 innings of the series as all three Golden Eagle starters went at least six innings and did not surrender a run all weekend.
* The Golden Eagles recorded consecutive shutouts in the first two LA Tech games for the first time in back-to-back games since they beat Ole Miss (10-0/March 20) and Houston (8-0/March 23) in 2012.
* Bradley Roney collected a season-high four RBI in the LA Tech series finale, clubbing a three-run homer in the first inning – his second of the year – to highlight a five-run first to help the Golden Eagles sweep the series.
* Christian Talley threw eight strong innings in the middle game of the series and collected his second double-digit strikeout performance with 10 against the Bulldogs.
* Connor Barron returned to action on Saturday as a defensive replacement, after missing five games with concussion-like symptoms.
* The Golden Eagles will play the C-USA league leader for the second time in the last three weeks when they entertain Rice next weekend.
