RANKIN COUNTY, MS - (UPDATE)

The Rankin County Sheriff's Department is investigating an apparent murder-suicide involving a Hinds County Sheriff's deputy and his wife.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey says 34 year old Chris Smith and his wife, 27 year old Amber Smith, were found dead at 126 Caledonian Boulevard, off Holly Bush Road in Rankin County, around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Bailey says the person who called 911 said the couple's two young children came to their house and said their dad may have shot their mother.

Bailey says one of the children told the deputies of hearing her parent's arguing. Then, they went into the master bedroom and locked the door. The child told the deputy she heard two gunshots.

Bailey says deputies found a pistol near the couple's bodies in the master bedroom. Both had fatal gunshot wounds.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis says Chris started with the department in 2004 as a narcotics investigator. Lewis says Chris served on a special task force.

The two children are now with their grandmother.
