Judge Emmett Lamar Battles was appointed to the bench in 2002 by Governor Jeb Bush. His first role was in juvenile delinquency. He's been serving in Hillsborough County's Felony Trial Division since September 2008.

Judge Battles started his public service as an active duty soldier in the U.S. Army from 1973 until 1995. He retired as a Colonel.

Battles got his undergraduate degree from Florida Southern College in 1973, then went to law school at the University of Florida, where he graduated with honors in 1980. He then went on to the Army Judge Advocate General School, where he graduated on the Commandant's List in 1985.

He's presided over some of the highest profile murder trials in the Bay area, including that of lottery murder suspect DeeDee Moore as well as Humberto Delgado, Jr.'s trial. He's on death row for killing Tampa Police Corporal Mike Roberts in 2009.
