Deputies identify victims in Domtar plant incident

Posted: Updated:
Deputies have identified the men involved in Monday's accident at the Domtar paper plant in Plymouth.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office says 56-year-old Lloyd Greene of Old Town, Florida was killed.

A spokesman from the Department of Labor says it's believed Greene was in front of a hydraulic line that became pressurized and burst.

Another man, 56-year-old Randy Hale of Washington was also injured.

The investigation is still underway to determine exactly what happened.

One person is dead and another injured after an incident at the Domtar paper mill outside of Plymouth.

Lt. Drew Robinson of the Martin County Sheriff's Office said the incident involved the release of hydraulic fluid that was under pressure. It happened near the plant, which is off U.S. 64 around noon on Monday.

Neal O’Briant, a spokesperson for the State Department of Labor, says the contractor that was killed worked for CBT Services, Inc out of Chattanooga, TN. The company does maintenance work at paper plants.

O’Briant says the man that was killed was working on a piece of machinery and the hydraulic line that was behind him became pressurized and burst. It’s believed that the line struck the employee.

Domtar officials said they are, "Deeply saddened by the loss of a contractor." The company added that it is fully cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

Hasson Williams, whose great-uncle works at the plant, says even though the plant doesn't often have accidents, he's still worried for his safety.

"It bothers me because it lets me know that you can never be too safe," Williams said. "I know the environment they're working in is not always the safest."

Domtar's website says the original pulp mill on the Washington-Martin county line was opened in 1937 by the North Carolina Pulp Co., with its first paper machine started in 1947. It was acquired by Weyerhaeuser in 1957 and started fine paper production in 1965.

The mill became part of Domtar in 2007.
