RIDGELAND, SC - A school bus was destroyed in a wreck on Friday morning, but miraculously none of the 10 middle school students aboard were seriously hurt.

The Jasper County School District told WSAV that  a district school bus was involved in a wreck Friday morning along Frontage Road outside of Ridgeland.

The district says there were a total of 10 students on the bus at the time of the accident, as well as the driver.

Eight students and the driver were transported to hospitals in the area with non life threatening injuries.  At least two students were transported to Beaufort Memorial and the remaining students were transported to Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville.

The crash happened when the 21-year-old bus driver tried to pick an item off the floor of the bus and swerved off the road's right side, Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly told the Beaufort Gazette newspaper

The driver then over-corrected, the bus crossed the centerline and went off the left side of the road, hitting a tree and turning on the side, the newspaper reported.

The bus was traveling towards Hardeeville-Ridgeland Middle School transporting middle school students when the accident happened.  The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

21-year-old Lacharles Singleton has been charged with driving too fast for conditions, The Gazette reported.
