Memorial service for teen killed in Trent River boating incident

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. - Friends and family remembered the life of a New Bern teenager, who died following a boating accident on the Trent River last week.

15-year-old Tanner Webb was a freshman at New Bern High School. He pitched for the JV baseball team.

Many family and friends say Webb may have died young, but he always lived life to the fullest.

As a tribute to Tanner, the New Bern baseball team gave his family a varsity letter, a plaque, and even retired the number 5 from the JV baseball team.

Players friends and Webb's father spoke at today's memorial service.

His baseball coach says even though Webb is gone his memory lives on.

After the memorial, a fellowship for Webb was held at the West of New Bern Fire Department.

Search and rescue crews have found the body of a 15-year-old boy.

He's Tanner Webb, a freshman at New Bern High School.

New Bern High School students are shocked and depressed as they mourn the loss of their classmate.

Webb was a freshman who pitched for the JV baseball team.

Tuesday night, students painted a rock outside the school in honor of Webb.

"Share a brush. Say a prayer," JV baseball coach Christian Desmarais said. "Do what you got to do."

As for the boating accident, wildlife officer Brandon Lyon says the investigation is still ongoing.

Webb was pulled from the Trent River Tuesday after about 20 hours of searching.

The State Wildlife Commission tells 9 On Your Side six people were on the boat Webb fell off of.

The 15 year old son of Craven County sheriff candidate Chip Hughes was among the juveniles on the boat, according to the candidate.

9 On Your Side spoke to Hughes on the phone, but he declined talking to us about what happened on the boat. He did say the boat is registered to his deceased father-in-law.

The Wildlife Commission says all six of the passengers, including Webb and Hughes’ son were all under-age.

Hughes says his family is close friends with Webb's family and doesn’t want to go on-camera because he feels it’s not in the best interest of Webb's family and the other families children.
