Jackson Doctor Charged With Wife's Murder Dies

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Miss. - A local doctor accused of killing his wife has died.

68-year-old William Mayfield died Friday afternoon, according to Tom Davis, a family member.

He was found unresponsive in his jail cell last month and was taken to the hospital. He was suffering from renal failure.

Police found Dr. Mayfield's wife, 67-year-old Susan Mayfield, suffering from a gunshot wound at their home on St. Andrews Drive in April. The victim was transported to a hospital where she later died.

Family members said they believe the shooting was an accident. Davis, Susan's brother-in-law, said Dr. Mayfield suffered from Parkinson's disease and the medicine he was taking caused him to become confused. The Mayfields had three sons, two of whom were physicians.
