FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The Fayetteville Police Department is seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect that assaulted a couple during a May 26 home invasion.

Police said John McNeill, 70, and his wife Joyce McNeill, 54, were waiting in their home for a ride to a scheduled medical appointment when a male suspect entered the home through the front door and demanded money from the McNeills.

Joyce McNeill said they were unable to give the suspect money and he began to assault them with the leg of a table from the McNeill's front yard.

Both victims suffered multiple head trauma-related injuries. They were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and John McNeill was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill where he remains in serious condition.

Joyce McNeill was recently released from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She has a broken arm and neck and said what the man really stole from her is her peace of mind.

"I kept saying, we don't have anything. Don't you think I'd give it to you if we had anything? We don't have anything," she recalled. "That wasn't good enough for him, he just beat us more."

Joyce McNeill said she believes she and her husband were set up by someone who knew their routine.

Police described the suspect at a black male in his late 20s to early 30s who stands about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs around 220 pounds. The person of interest has a muscular build with dreadlocks and long goatee.

Anyone with information about the home invasion and assault is asked to call Detective J. Nevitt with the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 433-1856 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477). You can also send a text message.
