JONES COUNTY, Miss. - A Jones County man is dead after a Wednesday night motorcycle crash that happened in the Ovett community.

Jones County Fire Council officials say 55-year-old Howard Murphy was riding his motorcycle when he ran off Tiger Creek Road around 8 p.m.

Witnesses who were following behind on their motorcycles say Murphy had just left Tiger Creek Missionary Baptist Church, which is located about a half mile from where he crashed.

Witnesses told authorities that the victim hit a culvert and flipped several times before crashing into several oak trees. Murphy was ejected from his bike and landed about 20 feet away in a ditch with water. They say they pulled his body out of the ditch and called 911.

Murphy received severe head trauma. Medical responders tried administering CPR, but he never regained consciousness. Deputy Coroner Ernest Hollingsworth pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
