Train Derails Near Lumberton; 1 Person Injured

LUMBERTON, Miss. - Emergency crews are cleaning up the scene of a train derailment near Lumberton that happened Wednesday morning.

Lamar County Emergency Management Director James Smith said 10 railcars and engine ran off the tracks at a switch point. The incident involving a Norfolk Southern freight train occurred around 3:30 a.m.

Authorities say an engineer was hurt in the accident. His injuries are reportedly non-life threatening. Sheriff Danny Rigel said the train was not carrying  any hazardous materials.

Officials on scene said the cleanup could take up to a few days.

Mississippi Highway 13 and Industrial Parkway Road near the derailment are closed for now.
