HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Classrooms are severely damaged at the McCarty Youth Development Center in Hattiesburg.

"Osceola McCarty Center, we just have this site which is the old Grace Love Head Start site that used to be in this building," said Janet Baldwin, Executive Director-Osceola McCarty Center.

The center's executive director, Janet Baldwin says the building sustained a substantial amount of damage in Katrina making the entire wing roofless inoperable.

Now the repairs will cost the non-profit center over one hundred thousand dollars.

"The buildings need to be worked on I know that for sure. And we could use, like we could use some more volunteers," said Jazlyn Dantzler, Center Volunteer.

According to Baldwin the center was donated by Hattiesburg public schools in 2007, making her responsible for getting repairs and finding a way to continue to serve low income families.

"These are single parents, grandparents raising children, very low income," Baldwin said.

With new programs and even a daycare in the works for the McCarty Center, a campaign to raise $160,000 for repairs is underway.

"We are expecting some community block grant money, through the city of Hattiesburg to come through to assist us with part of that," Baldwin explained.

The McCarty Center operates year round, Baldwin says the biggest concern is repairing the center so that the students have a roof and can be enriched in a safe environment.
